A warm welcome to today's Friday Feature.
Alankriti is a sanskrit word which means aesthetics. Ankita is an artist who has dabbled with paint, ceramic work, has made candles, created glass paintings, handmade cards and photography. With plans to expand her business not only in jewelry designing but paintings as well, Ankita has named her studio as Alankriti: Aesthetics by Ankita.
Ankita has always been interested in art. Her love for jewelry began when as a 10 year old girl, she would look around for pebbles and stones with the hope of finding treasure. She credits her mom for being the inspiration, her biggest critique and fan.
What got you started
After completing my MBA in Marketing, I got employed with a reputed organization in the country's trade capital, Mumbai. Often after my hectic schedule I used to sit at sea face and think about where my life was really taking me. In not much time I realized that I was not meant for what I was doing, and that my creativity was diminishing. Art had always been my passion and I had almost ignored it while coping with day-to-day life. As marriage was on the cards I soon got married to my soul mate in 2008. After a year of understanding and settling up in my new home, I realized it was time to follow my heart and passion. I started searching for various options. I saw handmade jewelry of a friend and got inspired, to try it myself and, to gift my mom-in -law a handmade pearl necklace. I posted its picture on a social networking site and was flooded with comments. Friends appreciated my efforts and suggested me to start making jewelry. That first piece of my handmade jewelry is close to her heart which she proudly flaunts every now and then. With lots of doubts and uncertainty I started my page on Facebook on 16th of October 2010. Since then there has been no looking back. Today I am at 800+ fans and 140+ sales. People love my work and trust me on my choices. Most of my customers become friends for life. It’s not a business for me. I treat this as a way to introduce my art to people, who can appreciate and feel for it like I do. In the end I just want to say that one should always follow her/his heart and instincts, as I love what I do because I do what I love.
I get my inspiration from little things in day-today life, seasons and nature. People say the color combinations I use are unique and beautiful which is what I have learnt from nature. The beauty of nature has always left me spell-bound and I have never seen any odd combination out there. I am working full time crafting jewelry, painstakingly made to be wearable, compassionate, affordable and able to pass my standards, which means that I offer to my clients only what I would personally be willing to buy for myself. I feel if I can’t wear them no one else would.
Describe your work and style
I work best when I am relaxed and that is when I wake up in the morning. I even dream about new designs and color options. I generally wake up with lots of ideas in mind and I note them down. I prefer taking pictures in the morning in natural light to showcase the real color .If you see my collection you will find that I have jewelry for all moods and occasions with modern thoughts embedded in traditional moulds. I create things with all my heart and fall in love with each piece. I try my best to use colors which are not easily available as options in jewelry in the market. I design stuff of all styles from traditional to chic to formal wear.
I love working on custom orders as they give me insight of the person I am working for. The whole process of suggesting designs, drawings, and stones is so much fun as it involves the person I am making jewelry for. I love it when I make things spontaneously like I start making with an earring with some picture in my mind and end-up making something absolutely different. Jewelry making also fulfills my love for photography and I give more time to present my work in a perfect way so that my clients can get an overview of all the minor details and appreciate the uniqueness of each piece.
